Biography of Sharon Lia Robinson
Sharon
is an experimental artist, writer and pathfinder. Her work
explores
connections between creative expression, inner
healing and renewal. She has been writing poetry, plays,
essays and fiction since the early 1970’s, often
to heal the inner landscape of her life, overcoming many
challenging
psychological circumstances related to family, trauma,
and society.
In the
early 1970’s, Sharon wrote for Sister!, a Los
Angeles feminist newspaper and pioneered the anthology, Shadow
on a Tightrope (writings by women on fat oppression) published
by Aunt Lute Press. Sharon’s essays and poetry in this
book are under the name Sharon Bas Hannah. The book is used
country-wide in women’s studies classes.
Sharon
participated in experimental theater in Massachusetts at
Goddard/Cambridge School for Social Change. She completed
a Master’s Degree (theatre and creative dance) in the
1980’s with graduate work focused on writing plays and
poetry to empower full-figured women and to heal her own self-image.
She performed and taught Middle Eastern dance.
Sharon has used dance for self-healing and to empower the
right of all people, no matter size or shape, to experience
the joy of creative movement. Her rock-musical, Dream Child,
explores our journey toward wholeness through music, poetry,
dialogue, dance and video. She hopes to meet musicians and
others to see this work onstage.
Sharon did a spiritual pilgrimage to India in 1995 to the
tomb of Avatar Meher Baba and to meet with his disciples. The
teachings of Meher Baba, along with nature and wholeness, inspire
her collage art, free-form poems, and short stories, including
verse for young children, influenced by her work as a nanny.
Sharon’s
poems have been published in Minotaur, Exhibition, The Higher
Source, Stories With Grace and other journals related
to the arts and healing. (Read

Collaborating
with a variety of photographers, including Steven R. Johnson
of Port Townsend, WA, Sharon works to document her
life. Rubenesque Landscape, featuring her poetry with Steven’s
photography, has been shown in notebooks, at local galleries
and art centers.
"My
writing often reflects the lives of people who are outcasts,
living on the edge, the search to find acceptance, and
our mystical journey toward wholeness and spiritual redemption.
Finding my way, I hope also to inspire others to live their
truth and to heal from trauma."
Sharon
In 1998, Sharon and Steven co-founded Edge of the Sea Gallery,
an alternative center for the arts, also in Port Townsend,
WA. Activities from this center were an extension of Sharon's
lifelong work. Resources were available in her areas of research,
including holistic modalities for trauma recovery, creative
dance and poetry happenings, and an art gallery displaying
local artists and poets. Sharon showed her collage art and
poetry, with paintings by Steven and his photography, mostly
black and white.
Although the gallery closed in 2003, Sharon
continues the goals that are evolving, including an ongoing
poetry salon in her home to encourage writers. She continues
to exhibit her own art and poetry and to research new modalities for health
and healing, (such as herbs, exercise, diet, bodywork and positive
visualization).
Passion Flower
By Sharon Lia Robinson
I drink the nectar
of the passion flower
and toss the bright red petals
into the clear rocky stream
my hands touch the earth
find one smooth round stone
waterfalls dance to the ocean.
